Dr. Joseph Ryan
I am married for 32 years with two children, both out of the house.
 I was chair of the department for 13 years and retired on 12/31/11. I am now emeritus professor in the department of psychological science. Since retiring, I have been teaching one graduate course, working on an occasional personal injury case for a local law firm, consulting with The Psychological Corporation/Pearson Assessment on test development issues, and continuing my research. I'm under contract to write a book for the American Psychological Association with a due date of 9/1/14. I am also working on two presentations for the International Neuropsychological Society North American meeting in February and a lecture I have to give at Roosevelt University in Chicago. I have also been watching a lot of old westerns and wasting time.
Joseph J. Ryan earned a BA from California State University, an MS from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He completed internship and post-doctoral supervision at the Little Rock and the North Chicago VA medical centers. He is licensed as a psychologist in the State of Missouri and is board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP/ABCN). He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, and National Academy of Neuropsychology and the recipient of the 2006 Kyle R. Carter Graduate Faculty Research Award from UCM, the 2006 Raymond D. Fowler Award from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), the 2007 William H. Byler Distinguished Faculty Award from UCM, and the 2011-2012 Outstanding Graduate Professor of Psychology Award from the Department of Psychological Science student body. In 2009, he received an honorary Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology and in 2011 he received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Education Alumni Association and was a finalist for the Lifetime Contributions to Neuropsychology Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology. |
Background
Prior to coming to UCM, he was Chief Psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist at the Eisenhower VA Medical Center (1984-1999) and adjunct professor of psychiatry (1989-1999) and adjunct associate professor of psychiatry (1985-1989) at the KU Medical Center. From 1978 to 1980 he was staff psychologist in psychiatry at the North Chicago VA Medical Center and from 1980 to 1984 he was coordinator of the VA Neuropsychology Laboratory. He was also assistant professor of psychology from 1978 to 1984 at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. From 1975 to 1977 he was a psychology intern and then a staff psychologist at the Little Rock VA medical center.
Scholarly Interests
Dr. Ryan is an active researcher (270 publications, 98 abstracts, and 178 professional presentations) and has enjoyed some success in obtaining grant funding. He has served on the editorial boards of professional publications including: Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology, The Clinical Neuropsychologist, and Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment. He is currently on the editorial boards of Applied Neuropsychology: Child and Applied Neuropsychology: Adult. He also established the Jerome M. Sattler Endowment (2002) and the Joseph J. Ryan Scholarship (2009) to financially support student research and educational expenses. Currently, his research activities focus on the assessment of intelligence and applied neuropsychology. In 2009 he published a text with his mentor, Jerome M. Sattler, entitled Assessment with the WAIS-IV. |
